About New Orleans:
New Orleans, affectionately called “NOLA” by the locals, is a wonderful city in which to live and not just visit. Old neighborhoods reflect the city's French, Spanish, and 19th century immigrant roots. In addition to quirky jazz, blues, and funk music clubs, there is the much-loved musician-governed Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Locals and tourists alike flock to watch the ornately decorated Mardi Gras parades role under the oak trees on St. Charles Avenue and to listen to some of the hundreds of performances at Jazz Fest, two of the most well-known local events
The city is recognized as one of the top food destinations in the world. There are more than one thousand restaurants in the city, some exciting new-on-the-scene, and others with famously long pasts (Antoine’s established 1840, Tujague’s established 1856). Sports fans will become passionate supporters of the NFL Saints and the NBA Pelicans. Spending a Saturday afternoon at the uptown campus watching the Tulane University Green Wave play ball is also a favorite pastime of many New Orleanians.
New Orleans is home to numerous museums including the National World War II Museum, the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience, and the Smithsonian-affiliated Ogden Museum of Southern Art. For those interested in shopping, the French Quarter, the Bywater, and Magazine Street offer unique antique shops, boutiques, and galleries. Royal Street and Julia Street alone are home to some of the most eccentric art galleries in the country.
Families have raised generations of children in the city regularly visiting the large and historic City Park (home to the City Bark Dog Park, the Louisiana Children’s Museum, and the finish lines for the 10K Crescent City Classic and the New Orleans Rock n’ Roll Marathon) as well as the many small neighborhood playgrounds. Passionate gardeners turn to Harold’s, Banting’s, and Perino’s for advice. Outdoor family recreation from bike rides on the levees of the Mississippi, to catching blue crabs in Lake Pontchartrain, to trips to the Audubon Zoo to stand atop Monkey Hill, fabled as the tallest point in New Orleans, are all quintessential parts of growing up in the city and a reminder to parents that there so much to enjoy outside of the walls of the hospital.
