The combined two-year residency program, which includes a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a concentration in Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership provides residents with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to assume a variety of roles and leadership positions. Upon completion of the program, residents are equipped to serve as vibrant, committed professionals with a focus on improving patients’ health, health care delivery, and the pharmacy profession as a whole. We help ensure their success through both didactic education and experiential opportunities in both the classroom and the workplace.

Graduates of the PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency program will join our alumni who have entered the workforce in a variety of roles, including directors of pharmacy, hospital executives, clinical leaders, and operational leaders.

While fulfilling PGY1 and PGY2 objectives, you will develop expertise in direct patient care, pharmacy operations, clinical management, medication safety, quality improvement, financial management, automation and informatics, policy development, interdepartmental collaboration, human resource management and much more. Residents will have the opportunity to tailor their training to areas that are of professional interest to them, including experiences in areas such as oncology, specialty pharmacy, sterile compounding, ambulatory care, etc. Please see our website for a comprehensive list of learning experiences offered at our program.

Longitudinal experiences include the option of a teaching certificate program, grand rounds continuing education presentations, robust longitudinal research projects, and, during the PGY2 year, a longitudinal management experience. The management experience allows the resident to actively manage a team, gaining hands-on leadership skills, HR experience, and preparation for leadership positions upon completion. Residents also complete the ASHP Pharmacy Revenue Cycle Management Certificate gaining knowledge in billing processes, reimbursement methodologies, and pharmacy finance which are key competencies for future pharmacy leaders. Didactic experiences that are funded by the residency program will include master level coursework at the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy to complement the core experiential competencies

Goal of the Program

• Be able to envision, plan, implement, coordinate and monitor patient care and operational services
• Be effective stewards of human resources, including recruitment, mentoring, evaluating and leading professionals and technical support staff
• Be adaptive leaders to changes and demands for health-system pharmacy practice and the health care environment in general
• Be strategic thinkers and planners who see challenges as opportunities to contribute to improving health care delivery
• Be consistently ethical and professional in their practice
• Be clinically competent in the practice of pharmacy
• Understand and assume the managerial and financial responsibilities in health-system pharmacies
• Have a vision for the future practice of pharmacy and possess the tools to realize that vision

Requirements: Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited school, licensure in the state of North Carolina or eligible, and ability to meet all requirements for application to UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Master Program.
