PHILOSOPHY: This ASHP-accredited PGY2 residency is designed to develop competencies necessary for specialized practice in critical care pharmacotherapy. The program is individualized to meet the needs and interests of the resident. The School of Pharmacy is part of the Anschutz Medical Campus of the University of Colorado Denver. PGY2 residents will be involved in teaching programs of the school, including didactic and/or experiential teaching of PharmD students and PGY1 residents, as well as medical/surgical residents and fellows. While the program focuses on enhancing clinical skills, a medication use evaluation (longitudinal assessment), research project (longitudinal assessment), and presentation of the project are required for successful completion of the residency. Many additional opportunities for participation in clinical research and scholarship are available. Residents will gain experience in teaching, medical writing, and often publishing. Upon completion of this residency, graduates will be prepared to practice as a critical care pharmacotherapy specialist in either a community or academic environment.
PRACTICE SITES/ROTATIONS: Major training site is the University of Colorado Hospital (UCHealth). Rotation sites may also include other hospitals in the Denver area offering unique learning experiences not available at UCHealth. Rotations are typically scheduled in 4 week increments. Required clinical rotations at UCHealth include 12 weeks MICU and 4 weeks of each: Neurosurgical ICU, Surgical/Trauma ICU, Infectious Disease Consult Service, and Cardiology/Heart Failure/Heart Transplant. Possible elective rotations include: UCHealth and/or Denver Health Emergency Departments, Solid Organ Transplant (lung, liver/ kidney), Bone Marrow Transplant, Burn ICU, Cardiothoracic ICU, Children’s Hospital PICU, and others.
Program Description:
This 12-month program provides a broad range of practice experience in critical care. The major training sites are the Intensive Care Units at the University of Colorado Hospital. Required or elective rotations include several ICUs (medical, surgical/trauma, cardiothoracic, burn, neurosurgical, cardiac), solid organ transplantion, infectious diseases, emergency medicine, and others. Off-site rotations in pediatric and adult ICUs and emergency medicine are also available. The program is individualized to meet the needs of the resident. While the program focuses on enhancing clinical practice skills, multiple scholarship, research and educational opportunities are available. Participation in clinical and didactic teaching of Pharm.D. students and PGY1 residents is encouraged. A research project is required.
