Mission Statement
The PGY1 residency program at Mercy Health — Fairfield Hospital develops the pharmacist both clinically and professionally beyond a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Each resident will work with the staff to customize their own educational experience with a mix of required and elective rotations including: ICU, Internal Medicine, Emergency Room, Surgery, Cardiology, Management and Drug Policy and Development. Upon graduation, the resident will be well prepared to practice in any setting, or pursue a specialized PGY2 residency program.
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
PROGRAM DESIGN / STRUCTURE
Mercy Health — Fairfield Hospital’s Pharmacy Residency Program accepts residents seeking to complete an ASHP-accredited Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) program. The program is not designed to provide sponsorship to international students. The focus of the PGY1 residency is the development of the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to pursue rational drug therapy by providing a broad scope of pharmaceutical services to patients and building a solid foundation for further development of advanced clinical pharmacy practice skills.
The PGY1 pharmacy residency program comprises three key areas: acute patient care, drug-use policy development, and practice management. These areas are represented through direct patient care rotations, clinical and didactic teaching activities, and completion of a longitudinal research project.
The Mercy Health — Fairfield Hospital PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is a 12-month program composed of four required competency areas: 1) Patient Care, 2) Advancing Practice and Improving Patient Care, 3) Leadership and Management, 4) Teaching, Education, and Dissemination of Knowledge. The broad scope of pharmacy patient care services offered provides a high degree of flexibility to pursue individual goals.
