Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Associate I for the Institute for Translational Medicine and Science.
The Research Associate I will support research on signal transduction mechanisms affecting airway tone in asthma, COPD, and fibrotic lung diseases, with a focus on how environmental factors and respiratory pathogens alter airway function. The Research Associate will perform a broad range of experiments related to evaluating cellular responses generated by glucocorticoids and cAMP-elevating agents, encompassing cell and molecular biology, tissue culture and animal work techniques. Primary responsibilities will include culturing different lung cell types (both primary cells and cell lines), performing human and murine Precision Cut Lung Slice (PCLS) experiments, performing immunological assays (immunofluorescent staining, ELISA, western blots, immunoprecipitations, and flow cytometry/FACS), and molecular biology techniques (PCR & real time-PCR techniques, DNA and mRNA sample preparation, plasmid DNA preparation, DNA subcloning, and siRNA/shRNA transfections). Additionally, the Research Associate I will focus on understanding how exposure to environmental factors and respiratory pathogens contribute to changes in airway function, will have an excellent work ethic, and be both motivated and productive.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Plans and executes research projects as assigned
Prepares high-quality manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, as well as data for research conference presentations and grant applications
Provides supervision and guidance to junior staff, undergraduates, and graduate students
Cell Culture work: media preparation, quality control testing, and daily maintenance of human airway muscle cell lines, epithelial cell lines, fibroblast cell lines, & air liquid interface co-cultures
Performs human and murine Precision Cut Lung Slice (PCLS) experiments
Conducts Protein work: Protein isolation, immuno-precipitations, & western blotting
Conducts Molecular Biology work: RNA/DNA isolation & purification, PCR & real time PCR, shRNA & siRNA transfections, etc.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Ph.D. degree in one of the following fields: biology, cell biology, pharmacology, molecular biology, or other related fields, plus 2 years of laboratory research experience.
Research experience in dissecting/understanding cellular signal transduction utilizing primary human cell lines is required for this position.
Expertise in performing basic scientific assays including: RNA/DNA extraction, and protein preparation, PCR & real time-PCR, western blot analysis, ELISA are essential.
A strong background in cell and molecular biology, and tissue culture are a prerequisite for this position.
