1. Job Summary and Essential Function
The Certified medical Assistant (CMA) in the ambulatory practice functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care. The CMA functions under the direct supervision of the physician/APN/RN/LPN when performing clinical tasks.
The CMA rooms patients, administers medications and immunizations, obtains vital signs, maintains and stocks rooms with an inventory of appropriate supplies. Ensures safe and efficient patient flow, tracks high-risk referrals and lab tests, assists with facilitating safe transitions of care and organizes the practice environment to assure patient safety and quality health outcome. Collaborates with team and contributes to successful team outcomes.
Promotes better patient outcomes by reviewing open gaps of care and coordinating closure of care gaps. Interacts directly with patients and team members, documents in electronic health record as appropriate.
2. Job Responsibilities
* Rooms and prepares patients for examination and treatment. Takes patients brief history and vital signs, documents in E.M.R, including reason for visit. Reviews open care gaps/quality indicators. Cleans room after each patient. Maintains efficient patient flow and keeps patients informed of any delays.
* Performs routine medical testing, i.e., phlebotomy, EKGs, pulmonary function tests, spirometry tests, hearing, vision (including color blindness test), urinalysis, rapid strep tests and drug screening, injections, and vaccinations as per department protocol. Documents appropriately in E.M.R
* Prepares lab requests and tests to be sent to lab. Uses two (2) patient identifiers on specimens and labels. Follows up on lab results as per physician orders. Documents appropriately.
* Notifies patient of change in medications/diet and reminders regarding appointments as per (verbatim) physician instructions. Monitors patients' need for weekly and/or monthly tests/follow up visits.
* Communicates with insurance carriers to obtain authorizations for procedures and pharmaceuticals. Follows up on referrals.
* Handles patient's requests for medical information, copies of medical records, refills, and test results, etc. as per policy. Schedules testing (in or out of office)
* Monitors assigned "inbasket" and clinical pools.
* Adheres to infection control and hand hygiene guidelines during all patient care activities. Recognizes and adheres to National patient Safety Goals and AMG policies/procedures.
* Performs Environment of Care laboratory quality control per policies.
* Reports safety concerns promptly using the AHS Event Reporting System.
* Supports the overall strategic goals of the clinical practice care area and AMG.
