The UNC Health Johnston PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education to contribute to the development of highly trained clinical pharmacists, eligible for board certification and for postgraduate year two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training. Our purpose is to develop community-based, pharmacist leaders with the ability to provide patient-centered pharmaceutical care as an integral member of the healthcare team.  

Our program is customized for each resident based on his or her goals, interests and experience, and offers an accelerated learning opportunity in inpatient pharmacy operations, clinical competency, clinical research, and leadership development. All residents are required to complete learning experiences in core subject areas considered to be essential to pharmacy practice. Residents are also expected to complete various projects throughout the year including a research project, poster presentation, and ACPE-approved continuing education.

 RESEARCH 

• Complete a residency project and present a research poster to peers at the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting and a platform presentation at a regional pharmacy conference. 

 STAFFING 

• Residents are required to staff the inpatient pharmacy every fourth weekend (8-hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday), and one weekday (depending on the rotation) each week in addition to their rotation hours. The weekend of ASHP Midyear may be excluded from this requirement in order to permit attendance at the ASHP Midyear meeting. 
• Residents will be expected to staff 1-2 holidays as defined in the UNC Health Johnston Pharmacy Policies and Procedures, based on departmental needs.

REQUIREMENTS

Graduate of an ACPE-accredited PharmD program, eligible for licensure in the state of North Carolina, and a US citizen or carry a permanent visa. UNC Health Johnston does not provide visa sponsorship for pharmacy residents. Candidates must apply using the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS).  A program-specific supplemental form should be completed and uploaded to PhORCAS.   

Residents are required to become licensed pharmacists in the State of North Carolina prior to or within 120 days after the program start date. 

 HOW TO APPLY 

Residency candidates should submit all requirements for acceptance through the PhORCAS website.  Once submitted, applications will be reviewed, and candidates will be selected for an on-site or virtual interview.  After the interviews are completed, a rank list will be submitted to ASHP via the National Matching Service. The ASHP Resident Matching Program will provide the program with matched candidates. 

All applicants much be registered with the National Matching Service. An employment application will be required after the match results have been posted.

• Official transcript from all colleges of pharmacy attended 
• The applicant must possess a Pharm.D. degree from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy
