Description
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program – Acute Care Setting was first accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in 1989 and most recently re-accredited in 2021. The program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of institutional practice with an emphasis on the delivery of pharmaceutical care and clinical services. PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Rotations
The 52-week postgraduate training experience is composed of a variety of required and elective rotations, as follows:
- Orientation (6 weeks)
- Cardiac Service Line (CCU or HF-TOC) (4-5 weeks)
- Surgical Service Line (TICU, Neuro-ICU or CTICU) (4-5 weeks)
- Intensive Care Service Line (MICU, TICU, or CTICU ) (4-5 weeks)
- Transitions of Care Service Line (Internal Medicine, Heart Failure, or Abdominal Transplant) (4-5 weeks)
- Infectious Disease (4-5 weeks)
- Internal Medicine (4-5 weeks)
- Administration (Clinical or Practice Management) (4-5 weeks)
- Pharmacokinetics and On-Call (Longitudinal)
- Inpatient Pharmacy Staffing (Longitudinal)
- Pharmacy Management/Leadership & Professional Development (Longitudinal)
- Clinical Precepting (Concentrated)
The specific program for each resident varies based upon the resident’s goals, interests, and previous experience. However, all residents are required to complete the above core rotations. The required rotations above can be repeated and tailored to resident interests as an elective, or the resident may select from elective rotations: Emergency Medicine, Oncology (inpatient/clinic), Advanced Heart Failure (inpatient/clinic), Internal Medicine Clinic, Anticoagulation Clinic, Addiction Medicine, or Transplant Services (abdominal or heart). The program also offers a Teaching Certificate Program with affiliated University as an elective.

Applicants must have graduated from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy and must be eligible for Pennsylvania licensure.
