PGY2 Critical Care Residency (2 residents)
The PGY2 Critical Care Residency is a one year commitment designed to provide post graduate experience in the provision of pharmaceutical care to critically ill patients. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center is an Academic Medical Center affiliated with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, with 1032 beds and 163 ICU beds. Required rotations include cardiac, medical, neuroscience, trauma and cardiothoracic/surgical ICUs along with staffing and research. Elective rotations include emergency medicine, pediatric critical care, solid organ transplant, infectious diseases and medical toxicology. Residents complete a research project, medication utilization review, assist with pharmacy student and staff education and participate in various journal clubs and topic discussions throughout the year.
PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant Residency (1 resident)
The PGY2 solid organ transplant residency is a one-year commitment designed to provide post-graduate practical experience in the provision of pharmaceutical care to solid organ transplant recipients. Required rotations include: kidney transplant I and II, liver transplant, heart transplant, lung transplant, outpatient abdominal transplant, and infectious diseases. Elective rotations include liver transplant II, heart transplant II, lung transplant II, outpatient abdominal transplant II, heart failure ICU, cardiothoracic ICU, and surgical ICU. Residents are required to complete a research project and a secondary project (example: medication utilization evaluation or quality improvement project/initiative), aid in pharmacy student and staff education, participate in various journal club and topic discussions throughout the year, and assist with creating or revising a transplant protocol.
The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency is a one year commitment designed to provide post graduate experience in the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients with Infectious Diseases. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center is a 1,032 bed Academic Medical Center affiliated with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Required rotations include 3 months of ID consult service, 2 months of antimicrobial stewardship, microbiology, critical care and infectious diseases in special populations. Other required rotations include longitudinal experiences in antimicrobial stewardship/infectious diseases leadership and outpatient management of patients living with HIV. Elective rotations include an additional critical care rotation, an additional special population, cystic fibrosis, travel medicine and emergency medicine. Residents are required to complete a research project, medication utilization review or quality improvement initiative, assist with pharmacy student/resident and staff education, and participate in journal clubs and topic discussions throughout the year.
The Infectious Diseases division at UH Cleveland Medical Center consists of both inpatient and outpatient services and is the primary teaching site for the Case Western Reserve University ID Fellowship Program. UH Cleveland Medical Center and UH Rainbow Babies & Children's are renowned for their robust antimicrobial stewardship (AS) program, which has been designated as an IDSA Antimicrobial Stewardship Centers of Excellence. The AS team is actively engaged in multidisciplinary research, hospital and system-wide initiatives, and didactic programs including a dedicated AS rotation for ID fellows, the IDSA AS Curriculum, and conferences for internal medicine and other trainees. The group publishes a quarterly newsletter and an annual guidebook and serves as the focal point for AS throughout the hospital system.
