William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan is a 1100-bed academic medical center with Level I Adult Trauma, Level II Pediatric trauma, and Comprehensive Stroke Center designations. This residency provides a well-rounded experience in both the medical and surgical critical care populations. A number of core and elective rotations strengthen the resident’s critical care fundamentals as well as providing flexibility to meet the individual's needs. The program is designed to transition PGY1 residency graduates from general pharmacy practice to specialized practice that meets the needs of critically ill patients by developing the resident's clinical expertise in critical care. It also provides additional opportunities for teaching, research, quality improvement, and professional writing.
Training focuses on developing resident capability to deal with a range of diseases and disorders that occur in the critically ill. Special emphasis is placed on the complexities of multiple organ system failure and the difficulties imposed on care when patients require life-sustaining equipment.
The Department of Pharmaceutical Services affiliated with the PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program utilizes an integrative practice model where pharmacists have responsibilities for both distributive and clinical functions. Distributive services are provided through a centralized model, with satellites in critical areas (pediatrics, oncology, operating rooms, and emergency center). Pharmacy operations are supported by technology including Omnicell automated dispensing cabinets. The medical record is supported by Epic oneChart, with implemented electronic Medication Administration Record and Barcode Medication Administration functionality.
A variety of clinical services are offered, including pharmacokinetic dosing, anticoagulation monitoring, antimicrobial stewardship, renal dose adjustments, IV to PO conversions, and participation in multidisciplinary patient care rounds and huddles. Our institution employs over 25 clinical preceptors, the majority of whom hold adjunct faculty appointments with neighboring Colleges of Pharmacy and/or the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.
