PROGRAM PURPOSE
The purpose of the Wellstar Cobb Medical Center PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is to build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete this PGY1 residency program will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
RESIDENCY PROGRAM GOALS
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program conducted by Wellstar Cobb Medical Center in Austell, Georgia is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The goal of this 12-month residency program is to provide extensive educational and training experiences for pharmacists in contemporary pharmacy practice in an organized healthcare system. The Wellstar Cobb Medical Center PGY1 Residency Program will utilize the collective assets of Wellstar Health System (WHS) to accomplish this goal. The major job responsibilities of this position are clinical intervention, continuing education, drug distribution, leadership, patient education, and research. This program is designed to assure competency with the outcomes, goals, and objectives outlined in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Accreditation Standard. In addition to the expectations outlined in the accreditation standard, graduates of this program will be able to:
Function effectively as a member of the healthcare team
Follow the “best practice” model in the delivery of patient care
Identify, prevent, and resolve medication-related problems for patients
Participate in drug use review, drug policy development, and quality improvement initiatives
Educate healthcare providers, patients, and students through written and verbal means
Master skills for future success in either a specialty residency or clinical practice

Wellstar Cobb Medical Center Department of Pharmacy utilizes automated drug delivery units throughout the hospital. We have a Central Pharmacy, Operating Room (OR) Satellite, and Outpatient Infusion Center (OPIC). In addition, pharmacists have workstations on patient care units and participate in daily physician-led interdisciplinary rounds. We have a team that includes board certified clinical pharmacists who specialize in emergency medicine, critical care, burn management, transitions of care, infectious disease, pain management/hematology-oncology, internal medicine, neonatal medicine, and women's health.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
In order to successfully complete the Wellstar Cobb Medical Center PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program, the resident must:
Complete all required learning experiences (LEs)
Receive score of ACH (achieved) for 80% (25 of 31) of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program objectives on at least two learning experiences for Competency Area R1 and at least one learning experience for Competency Areas R2, R3, and R4 by the end of the residency year. The resident must not have "needs improvement" (NI) for any objective by June 25th of the end of the residency year.
Serve as the chief resident as assigned during the residency year
Complete the Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) curriculum, obtain ACLS and PALS certification, and participate in codes
Complete a research project designed to improve pharmacy department services and/or patient outcomes and:
Present the research project as a poster at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting (MCM) or other designated meeting
Present the research project at the Southeastern Residency Conference (SERC) or other designated meeting
Submit a research project manuscript suitable for publication prior to the end of the residency year
Complete a minimum of one medication use evaluation (MUE) and one drug monograph to develop an understanding of the medication use process
Prepare and present a one-hour Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-approved continuing pharmacy education (CPE) presentation
Precept advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) Doctor of Pharmacy students
Complete training in a Pharmacy Teaching Program (PTP) and obtain a pharmacy teaching certificate
Complete staffing requirements outlined in the residency manual

Residency applicants must possess a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and be licensed in the state of Georgia within 90 days of the residency start date.
