The Moores Cancer Center (MCC) is one of just 57 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States and the only one in San Diego County. Under close supervision, perform tasks and assays to support research on tumor inflammation. Responsibilities include assisting with animal colony management, genotyping, breeding and weaning as well in vivo animal experiments that assess the role of immune cells in cancer. Assist with molecular biological, biochemical, and cell biological techniques including tumor cell culture, DNA and RNA isolation from cultured cells and from tissues, immunoblotting and quantitative RT-PCR for genes and proteins. Assist with assays that evaluate T cell functions in vitro and in vivo. Assist in performing bone marrow transplants. Assist with isolating bone marrow and blood cells for analysis using flow cytometry, immunoblotting, gene expression and cell biology assays. Assist in protein biochemical techniques such as protein purification, protein labeling, and protein analysis. Perform basic sectioning of tissues, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy, ELISA assays, and SDS PAGE analyses. Maintain and prepare accurate records of all experiments. Other duties assigned as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical knowledge in molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology and cell biology.
Experience isolating bone marrow and blood cells for analysis by in vitro assays such as flow cytometry, immunoblotting, gene expression and cell adhesion assays.
Experience with in vivo experiments including assisting in the injection of growth factors and tissue harvesting of mice and in performing minor surgery.
Experience with cell culture, DNA and RNA isolation from cultured cells and tissues, immunoblotting and quantitative RT-PCR for genes and proteins.
Experience with animal colony management, genotyping, breeding and weaning as well in vivo animal experiments that assess the role of immune cells in cancer.
Willingness and ability to learn basic tissue culture techniques, including sterile technique, cell adhesion and migration assays.
Ability to perform basic molecular biological techniques, including DNA purification and cloning.
Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.
Ability to learn and carry out new experimental procedures with accuracy and efficiency.
Ability to use basic laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, spectrophotometers, balances pH meters and electrophoresis equipment.
Ability to follow step wise experimental protocols.
