The University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (UB SPPS), in conjunction with the New York State Department of Health (DoH), Office of Health Insurance Programs (OHIP) is pleased to offer a 2-year fellowship in pharmacy informatics, population health management and data analytics. The fellow will have clinical and operational experiences with various aspects of population-based health management for NY Medicaid members. Opportunities will be available to audit 1 course per semester and participate in a teaching certificate program. The fellow will conduct 1 or more research projects focusing on epidemiology and informatics-driven areas using the NY Medicaid database or other databases. Successful completion of this fellowship will enable the fellow to practice in a variety of settings, including academics, pharmaceutical industry, government agencies, pharmacy benefit managers, and managed care organizations.

The fellow will be expected to assist with document preparation to support the quarter Drug Utilization Review Board (DURB) meetings and other ad-hoc projects assigned by DoH. Opportunities will be available to lead a project and give presentations at DURB meetings. The fellow will also be expected to assist with monthly retrospective drug utilization case reviews for NY Medicaid members with pharmacists in the retroDUR team.

The fellow will be expected to conduct research projects, abstracts, posters, and final manuscripts as a primary author or co-author under the mentoring of UB faculty members. Projects will range in scope from being prospective grant-funded research to exploratory retrospective analyses in drug therapy outcomes, pharmacoepidemiology and health services research areas. Opportunities will also exist to assist with grant preparation and submission as co-investigator or principal investigator. The fellow will gain experience in study design methodologies, data analysis, and dissemination of research through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and to the broader scientific community.

The fellow will receive an academic appointment as an adjunct instructor in the UB SPPS. The fellow will be responsible for preparing and delivering a continuing education seminar, co-precepting for both introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experience rotations. To compliment these teaching activities, the fellow must participate in the teaching certificate program. The fellow may also assist with providing research oversight of students in the Clinical Research Program, residents, and other fellows.

The fellow will be expected to audit at least 1 course during each semester (Fall/Spring) at the university. The determination of courses to be taken will be made with the direction of the program director to optimize strengths/weaknesses and the fellows interest areas. Available course work will be drawn from a list of courses offered by the university. 

The candidate must have a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE accredited (or equivalent) College of Pharmacy or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in a relevant discipline.

Candidates must be eligible for pharmacy licensure in NYS and licensed within 90 days after starting.

Completion of a PGY-1 pharmacy residency is preferred but not required.

Candidates must demonstrate a high level of motivation and interest in health outcomes, pharmacoinformatics, or epidemiology.
