This 14-month, Washington, D.C.-based, co-sponsored program has been preparing pharmacists for careers in public service since 2006. The program is an enriching opportunity for each fellow to develop legislative evaluation and policy development skills, improve research and writing skills, and integrate practical policy experience with theory. This program prepares pharmacists for careers in federal agencies, state or professional societies, pharmaceutical industry or a career focused on healthcare policy, research or education. Check out where the program has taken our alumni fellows.
Healthcare policy intersects with complex societal issues; thus, the program emphasizes policy-oriented learning through participation and collaboration. The Fellow utilizes their scientific, therapeutic and pharmaceutical knowledge as well as patient care experience to bring external perspectives to the policy process. The Fellow will gain experience in issue prioritization, policy analysis, legislative evaluation and policy development, effective writing, and advocacy program development and implementation skills. After foundational experiences in conjunction with the sponsoring organizations during July and August, the fellow spends the next 12 months working within an individual Congressional Senator’s or Representative’s personal office or as a member of a Congressional committee staff.
Candidates must be:
a graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy
a pharmacist with at least one year of residency training or several years of professional experience, ideally providing direct patient care
a U.S. citizen
Preference will be given to pharmacists with demonstrated awareness or a track record of advocacy regarding health care or social issues.
Application Instructions are on the program web site and all documents should be submitted to the Program Director prior to January 31.
The Congressional Healthcare Policy Fellow Program, a collaborative effort of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, prepares pharmacists for public service.
