The specialty pharmacy manager will be responsible for leading pharmacists, technicians, and prior authorization coordinators to promote the specialty pharmacy while ensuring safe medication dispensing practices. The specialty pharmacy team members work in three primary functional areas which include prior authorization services, operations (dispensing, packing, and shipping) and clinical services. Additionally, the specialty pharmacy manager will have oversight of accreditation standards (URAC, ACHC etc.) and compliance with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) regulations. This leader will be responsible to assist the Outpatient Pharmacy Director with the development and implementation of strategic initiatives. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of assigned area(s).
Responsibilities:
The Specialty Pharmacy Manager oversees the functions, services, and staff within the pharmacy department in agreement with systemwide goals.
Works in conjunction with the Director of Pharmacy to give comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients, utilizing the standards of evidence-based medicine and medication safety to assure positive therapeutic outcomes.
Drives the development, education, implementation and monitoring of all operational initiatives to give optimal pharmaceutical care.
Ensures that patient care meets standards of safety, effectiveness, patient rights, and customer service.
Oversees and sets priorities for the daily operations of the department to assure the provision of quality pharmaceutical care.
Maintains or oversees staff schedule and ensures adequate shift coverage in all areas of the assigned areas of the department.
Aids the Director with the development and execution of departmental policies and procedures, ensuring perpetual readiness and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, and accreditation standards.
In conjunction with selection, orientation, training, assignment and staffing, evaluation, performance expectations and evaluation, discipline and discharging employees in compliance with applicable employment regulations.
Verifies that all required pharmacy, pharmacist, and technician licenses/registrations are current and valid as required by State, Federal and enterprise guidelines.
Aids the Director with preparation, approval and ongoing monitoring of the departmental budget which reflect the team, equipment, supplies and drug expenditures necessary to give pharmaceutical care activities.
Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of Pharmacy Care modalities, terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, terminology, drug use and aseptic techniques, standards, and equipment
Knowledge or understanding of retail pharmacy and outpatient reimbursement
Knowledge of the 340B drug pricing program to ensure ongoing compliance
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and regulatory requirements
Knowledge of pharmaceutical operations
Ability to make operational judgments around how work gets done - quality and productivity standards, measurable goals for employees and project teams, etc
Ability to use broader goals to establish how best to use resources to meet schedules and goals
Ability to make or approve effective hiring and termination
Ability to evaluate and recommend changes to policies and establish procedures that affect the managed organization
Basic business knowledge, including but not limited to annual planning and goal setting, adherence to budgets, employee compensation, compliance and risk management
General computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email
Required Education
Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited school of pharmacy
Advanced leadership degree MBA, MHA, MS (preferred)
Required Experience
At least one year of work experience in a hospital or specialty pharmacy setting, with at least three years of leadership experience (preferred)
Required Licenses and Certifications
Current Texas Pharmacist licensure
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 90 days of hire
Texas State Board of Pharmacy preceptor certification within 90 days of hire
