The Financial Analyst position will be located in the University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals (UIP) division in the College of Pharmacy. This is a business operation established almost 45 years ago to provide contract pharmaceutical manufacturing and testing in a highly regulated environment. As an active team member, this position provides a unique opportunity to support a commercial operation while working in an academic setting.
The Financial Analyst role is a blend of Accounting and Financial Analysis duties that tend to align to periods in the reporting and planning cycles. The role performs a wide range of routine and complex accounting and financial analysis activities that require a high level of independent judgment, discretion and business acumen. This includes interfacing with unit leadership while preparing and reporting unit/departmental budgets and financial reports. Responsible for providing advice and guidance to ensure accounting and financial processes and procedures adhere to university and federal policies. Will also assist with development and delivery of training solutions associated with financial/accounting systems and practices.
This position is eligible for up to 50% hybrid work. During peak times, such as budgeting, the position will require full on-campus presence.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Financial Oversight and Budgeting
Contribute to financial oversight and monitor revenue and expenditures for many complex accounts, including budget development and forecasts.
Assist in the development and implementation of UIP and university financial policies and procedures.
May develop methods for improving efficiencies and recommend improvements to existing manual or automated accounting systems, policies, or procedures.
Financial Reporting
Support and conduct month-end and year-end accounting and reporting.
Participate in the monitoring and reporting of departmental budgets and associated budget vs. actual variances.
May prepare periodic and special financial reports as requested.
Financial Analysis and Planning
Assist in providing insightful, actionable forecasting, planning and analysis.
With guidance, research, resolve, and correct account discrepancies and errors.
Complete and perform reconciliations of account balances following pre-established processes.
Compliance with Policies, Regulations and Laws and Operational Oversight
May interpret policies, regulations, and guidelines to ensure compliance.
Support reviews of operational procedures and may recommend appropriate modifications.
Assist in periodic and special audits as necessary.
Transaction Processing
Prepare and review accounting entries for submission to the University general ledger.
Prepare billing transactions.
May review and approve financial transactions.
Leadership and Training
Under general guidance, assist in preparing materials and providing training on policies, procedures, and use of accounting information.
Respond to inquiries and provide accounting support from stakeholders as requested.

Education Requirement
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting or Finance; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Experience Required
Typically, a minimum of 1 year of accounting and/or financial experience to include:
Application of general knowledge of accounting practices in a monthly close and reporting environment.
Exposure to financial statement preparation (profit & loss statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows).
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of MS Excel spreadsheets.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated problem-solving and teamwork skills required.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience with invoicing and inventory applications.
Experience preparing and monitoring budgets.
Experience with University of Iowa accounting financial systems.
