Position Title: Assistant Director of Laboratories
Position Function: The Assistant Lab Director reports directly to the PHS department Lab Director to achieve the strategic priorities of the Department and the University. The position requires interacting with lab supervisors, lab technician and graduate instructors with limited interaction with students, faculty and university staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance of Equipment
Maintain equipment service contracts and follow up on complaints and repairs of larger equipment.
Train graduate students in the correct use of lab equipment, troubleshoot equipment issues and perform minor repairs related lab equipment used in undergraduate teaching labs.
Communicate with lab supervisors and lab technician on maintenance and repair of graduate lab equipment.
Management and Supervision of Graduate Instructors
Maintain records of graduate instructor applications, graduate instructor course and CRN assignments, leave requests and handle emergencies.
In conjunction with lab supervisors, schedule and conduct general meeting, routine lab meetings, and workshops to train graduate instructors and to keep them informed of activities.
Evaluate the performance of the instructors and make recommendations for course assignments and promotions.
Supervise lab meetings, and lab safety and other lab training events to ensure all labs run smoothly.
In conjunction with lab director, revise and update student and instructor lab policies and protocols and ensure all instructors have proper certification to be in lab.
Assign proctoring assignments throughout year for faculty and adjuncts for PHS lecture courses.
Proctor midterm and final exams to ensure standardization and fairness.
Manage, supervise and monitor a diverse group of instructors for undergraduate teaching labs.
Supervision of Lab Rooms
Regular inspection of lab rooms for cleanliness, leaks and equipment and computer issues.
Schedule facility service as needed for lab room maintenance.
Support Lab Director
Development of Lab activities for new programs and trouble shoot activities.
Teaching support limited to emergency situations.
Developing and implementing lab policies and procedures.
Assigning instructors in LMS (Canvas).
Assist lab director with protocols, lab activities, communication and resolving conflicts.
Attend professional development functions when required.
Participate in university events such as open house and accepted students day.
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree required; Graduate degree majoring in science preferred
3-5 years of related experience required
Good computer skills with proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook and with training perform database entries in the PHSLABS databases and LMS (Canvas)
Ability to interact professionally with diverse group of students, faculty and support staff
Excellent oral and written communications skills
Motivated, focused approach, proactive
Work effectively as a team member and participate in improving the lab organization and activities
Ability to follow experimental protocols and test run lab experiments
Ability to oversee equipment contracts and maintain equipment
Conducive to a flexible schedule to support lab activities and class schedules
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $62,600 - $68,000. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
