The Moores Cancer Center is one of just 53 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States and the only one in San Diego County. The Research and Grant Development Manager is responsible for the short-and long term strategic program planning in order to advance goals and mission for UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. Serves as a key leadership role in assessing grant application objectives and planning strategies under which the proposal objectives will be attained. Develops, plans, evaluates and implements strategic and collaborative science (project type grants with multiple projects and cores), multi-million dollar research grant proposals for grant continuation and new grants related to cancer research. Conducts needs assessments, oversees data collection, engages in on-going efforts to improve data management procedures and optimization of models, performs complex analysis and evaluation of program activities for proposal submission. Develops metrics to illustrate collaboration and high impact research at MCC. Applies knowledge of biological sciences to translate medical, scientific, and technical language into easily understood concepts. Stays abreast of, and interprets for management and PIs, sponsor's rules and regulations and terms and conditions of specific grants, including those of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Identifies, researches and pursues new and relevant grant opportunities and communicates such opportunities to leadership and PI's. Develops and maintains collaborative, working relationships with the Cancer Center's leadership team, Principal Investigators (PIs), and the scientific writing team. Provides consultative service to Program and Division Leaders, PIs, and internal staff regarding submission of proposals.
Project Management skills will be utilized to ensure smooth and timely operation of internal and external grant programs, including management of foundation grants, internal pilot grants, limited submissions, and large federal and collaborative grants. Grant management and writing skills will be used to ensure grant documents are complete, adhere to funding agency guidelines, and are submitted on time.
This position is afforded significant latitude for complex research projects, decision-making and independent judgement. Responsible for managing writing, team and writing research grant proposals including updates and progress reports. Manages all administrative aspects of manuscript submission and grant proposal processing. Review and edit manuscripts and proposals for accuracy. The position is involved with scientific, regulatory, administrative and budgetary goals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Five or more years of directly relevant experience.
In-depth academic background and experience in selected area of research including record of publications in related field(s). Advanced background in life sciences, social science, public health, biostatistics, or other applicable academic
