DESCRIPTION
UCSD Health Sciences is a $1 billion dollar plus organization encompassing 16 academic departments (14 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 2 pre-academic/hospital departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and SkaggsSchool of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated towards fulfilling the Health Sciences missions. The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high-throughput genomics, systems biology, and crystallography.
Our 36 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology. Under supervision, the Research Associate will perform entry level duties in a lab that uses a combination of biochemistry and structural biology (both x-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy) to study mechanisms of genome organization, recombination, and chromosome segregation in mitosis and meiosis.
The incumbent will pursue specific projects involving molecular biology, protein purification, and biochemistry. Duties will also include lab organization and maintenance, moderate administrative work including ordering, safety oversight and supervision of undergraduate lab assistants.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, including relevant laboratory techniques. Must be willing to learn.
Experience in general laboratory equipment including spectrophotometers, centrifuges, balances, autoclaves, and pH meters.
Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability in using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Ability to work as part of a research team and interact effectively with collaborating labs and others in scientific community, maintaining good working relationships with all members of the research groups.
Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
Knowledge to proactively maintain an organized lab and stocks of essential supplies and media, purchase new equipment, and ensure lab equipment is operating effectively. Must be able to lift up to 20 lb. onto laboratory shelves.
Experience in working with computers word processing, spreadsheet, and internet programs.
Must be willing to vary work schedule to accommodate research needs and performing related duties as assigned or requested.
Knowledge of proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials including radioactive materials. Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior experience working in a lab that focuses research on biochemistry and structural biology (both x-ray crystallography and cryo-em microscopy)

Annual Full Pay Range: $51,949 - $61,972 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
