The Heart Center in the Department of Pediatrics at Columbia University is seeking a motivated Biostatistician/Econometrician/, with expertise in both large data and clinical trial analytics, to lead data analyses in cardiac related registries, databases and research projects.
The Divisions of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery at CUIMC are international leaders in congenital cardiac research initiatives and discoveries. Our team works collaboratively with many departments and divisions not only on the Columbia campus but with institutions throughout the world, making new discoveries and developing innovative technologies and therapies for children and adults born with cardiac defects, and infants and children with acquired heart disease.
Our program at Columbia and Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is a major center for clinical research involving congenital and pediatric cardiovascular diseases affecting fetuses, children, and adults. Each of our clinical subspecialty areas is actively involved in clinical and translational research protocols to advance the care and improve the lives of our patients with heart disease.
Our team currently participates in investigations ranging from transcatheter and surgical device trials, pharmaceutical trials, health services/health equity analytics of linked clinical registry-administrative (Medicaid, etc) data, and quality outcomes and safety metrics.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate will be responsible for:
Designs, analyzes, implements, and reports findings on targeted statistical research studies; provides consultation to investigators and researchers on experimental design and statistical research approaches, requirements, and scientific standards to advance medical knowledge and improve research in public health.
Works with investigators and partners with our data team / mentors junior analysts to formalize analysis plans and reporting specifications; advises on statistical methodology, reliability of measurements, and interpretation and presentation of statistical results.
Builds and sustains collaborative relationships with individuals in different disciplines and serves as subject-matter expert for research teams, internal and external committees, and other constituencies and collaborators.
Assists in the preparation of clinical trial documents and reports, protocols, investigator brochures, scientific abstracts, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and responses to requests from regulatory agencies, local Institutional Review Board, and other health authorities.
Reviews and analyzes safety reporting, biomarker analyses and other aspects of clinical trial monitoring.
Plans and documents computer data file structure; develops, programs, manages, and maintains complex statistical databases.
Uses a variety of advanced statistical software, methods, and techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret research data to derive useful information for research data; advises and assists in the development of inferences and conclusions, as appropriate.
Develops enhancements to statistical software, as appropriate, by programming new techniques; maintains knowledge of current and emerging trends in statistical analysis methodology.
Oversees and coordinates the work of statistical support staff, data entry staff, and/or students, as appropriate to the position, on a project, site, or operational basis.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Participate in writing of manuscripts and grants.
Requirements
Interest in and ability to work in a team
PhD in biostatistics/epidemiology/economics/data science or equivalent experience in leading large scale biostatical projects
Demonstrated experience in data analysis or method development.
Programming: fluency with at least one language for scientific computing (STATA, SAS, R, etc).
Experience with source code version control systems.
Strong creative thinking and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication skills, good writing, and teamwork.
Knowledge and ability to apply a range of advanced statistical methodologies, including multilevel modeling, analyses of longitudinal data, causal inference.
Ability to consult with scientific investigators, interpret research requirements, and determine statistical analysis strategies.
Ability to plan, create, program and manage complex statistical computer databases.
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in advanced statistical analysis for scientific application.
Knowledge of scientific reporting and manuscript preparation requirements and standards.
Ability to work in a team environment to design, analyze, and report on research projects.
Strong analytical communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to professional personnel in area of expertise.
Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize projects.
In-depth knowledge and understanding of probability and medical statistics theory.
Knowledge of data management principles and regulatory requirements for clinical trials and medical research.
