Description

The Program was established in 2012 and most recently accredited by ASHP in 2021. The program provides an environment for comprehensive education and training in drug therapy and disease state management for patients in a collaborative ambulatory setting. The PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide-range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for post-graduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. Required rotations for this program are:

• Orientation (6 weeks)
• Drug Information and Clinical Skills Development (1 month)
• Anticoagulation Clinic and On-Call (Longitudinal)
• Internal Medicine Clinic (1 month)
• Emergency Medicine – Urgent Care (1 month)
• Heart Failure Transitions of Care (1 month)
• Advanced Heart Failure Clinic (1 month)
• Ambulatory Oncology Clinic (1 month)
• Pharmaceutical Care Services and Administration (1 month)
• Practice Management/Leadership and Professional Development (Longitudinal)
• Clinical Precepting (Concentrated)
• Outpatient Pharmacy Staffing (Longitudinal)

Elective rotations for this program are:

• Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Clinic
• Solid Organ Transplant Clinic (Heart or Abdominal)
• Chronic Disease Specialty Care Center
• Clinical Pharmacy Service Management & Education
• Specialty Pharmacy Ambulatory Care

The specific program for each resident varies based upon the resident’s goals, interests, and previous experience. However, all residents are required to complete the above core rotations. The required rotations can be repeated and tailored to resident interests as an elective, or the resident may select from elective rotations experiences. The program also provides a Teaching Certificate Program with an affiliated University as a longitudinal elective experience.

Applicants must have graduated from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy and must be eligible for Pennsylvania licensure. 

About PGY1 Pharmacy - Ambulatory Setting; Allegheny General Hospital

Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is an academic medical center serving Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area. The hospital annually admits more than 24,000 patients, and has nearly 800 physicians and approximately 5,000 employees that share AGH's commitment to excellence in patient care, medical education and research. AGH is the flagship tertiary care hospital in the Allegheny Health Network (AHN). The AGH Department of Pharmacy provides on-site outpatient pharmacy services and 24-hour inpatient comprehensive pharmacy services utilizing a decentralized, computerized unit-dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture programs in a newly remodeled pharmacy. Other pharmacy services include drug information, computerized inventory control and procurement systems, integrated drug use review, and quality improvement. Extensive in-service education and staff development programs are also available. The AGH Pharmacy Residency Programs consists of 19 residents within eight-different residency programs. PGY1 programs include Acute Care and Ambulatory Focused residencies. PGY2 programs include Ambulatory Care, Cardiology, Critical Care, Oncology, and Infectious Di...seases residencies. A combined PGY1-PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency Program with MPH at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health is also available. Residents receive a stipend of $44,000 for PGY1 and $46,000 for PGY2 with medical, prescription, dental, vision, disability, and life-insurance benefits. Thirteen paid days off are provided during the residency year outside of days to attend approved conferences.
