Postdoctoral fellowship position is available in the Jain laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Immunology, Washington University in St Louis. The lab is interested in understanding how microbiota and microbial metabolites interact with the host to influence chronic inflammation and fibrosis in human Inflammatory bowel diseases. The appointment is viewed as a training or transitional period preparatory to an academic, industrial, governmental, or other full-time research or teaching career.
The lab focusses on a reverse translation approach whereby hypotheses are generated by integrating human multi omics datasets (single cell RNA seq, spatial transcriptomics, metabolomics, and metagenomics) followed by testing in cell culture (epithelial organoids, fibroblasts) and mouse models of the disease (see Science 371:1154, Cell host microbe 24:353). The candidate will lead the project and work in close cooperation with other members of the lab performing routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout the training period. The candidate will be expected to interact on a regular basis with clinical collaborators, pharmaceutical partners, and computational biologists.Â
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
Prepares and submits papers on research as a first or co-author.
Assists in the design of research experiments.
Evaluates research findings and assists in the reporting of the results.
Conscientious discharge of research responsibilities.
Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.
Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice including the maintenance of adequate research records.
Engages in open and timely discussion with mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
Collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
Adheres to all applicable university policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in university laboratories remain the property of the university.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.
Preferred Qualifications
Skilled in primary and cell line cell culture, flow cytometry, mouse-handling, computational data handling, and analysis is strongly preferred.
Strong background in animal models of inflammation, microbiome studies, and epithelial or fibroblast biology.
Experience with Western blot analysis, RNA preparation, qPCR, mammalian cell transfection, and ELISA.
Enthusiastic, curious scientist, with a scientific background in immunology and microbiome research.
Willingness to learn and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary scientists.
Demonstrated ability to implement laboratory procedures, conduct research and records findings.
Working Conditions
This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
Salary Range
Base pay is commensurate with experience.

$54,840.00 - $54,840.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
