DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The department employs approximately 500 salaried faculty, 168 academic appointees, 331 residents, fellows, and postdocs and 479 staff personnel.

The Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine conducts research studies on Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in adult patients. The Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network (NASHCRN) is a multi-center study funded by NIH and is sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) to focus on the etiology, contributing factors, natural history, complications, and therapy of NASH and NAFLD. UCSD is one of eight sites nationwide associated with this study.

In addition, the NAFLD Research Center participates in numerous pharmaceutical clinical trials and PI initiated studies which focus on the discovery and validation of innovative biomarkers for NAFLD, with a special focus on identifying those patients at greatest risk for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), advanced liver fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Under the general supervision of the Director (Rohit Loomba, M.D, MHSc) and Assistant Director (Lisa Richards, MSN, FNP-BC) of the NAFLD Research Center, serve as the Senior Grant Writer. In this role, the incumbent is responsible for researching, developing, and writing grant proposals, while assessing overall fundraising objectives and planning strategies under which the proposal objectives will be attained with minimal supervision. Will also conduct needs assessments, oversee data collection, input, analyze and evaluate program activities for proposal submission as well as organize and interpret complex data and facilitate clear communication.

Writes and edits a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. Researches, selects sources for and conducts interviews, and ensures accuracy of written pieces. Recommends content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of printed and online material, or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Seven (7) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience/training.

• Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.

• Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.

• Strong skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and / or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location's message. Superior interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills to effectively communicate, collaborate, establish and maintain good working relationships with a diverse population. Ability to communicate with tact, diplomacy, flexibility, professionalism, and discretion.

• Proven knowledge of the location, including its mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policies.

• Demonstrated knowledge of issues in higher education, a specialized academic discipline or field and / or health sciences.

• Proficient knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and / or web production. Experience in data collection, management and analysis, using web tools, relational databases, statistical software and spreadsheets

• Thorough research and fact verification skills. Great attention to detail, project management and organizational skills.

• Effective interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• PhD in a field related to biological sciences.
