This Teaching Specialist position is a temporary two (2) year commitment, designed to provide teaching and support to professional pharmacy students, in the College of Pharmacy on the Duluth campus.

The incumbent in this position is intended to cover the following duties and responsibilities within the College of Pharmacy professional program. Serve as an in-person course instructor for the Pharmaceutical Care Skills Lab course sequence in Duluth during both Fall and Spring semesters, Course Director of calculations course that is delivered to year 1 students in their spring semester, as in-class support staff for team-based learning (TBL) activities on the Duluth campus to ensure students have an equitable experience and provide pharmacist expertise and serve as a guide and advisor to support the resident learning, if pharmacy residents are assigned to assist with TBLs. Provide support instructor service, upon request, for classroom activities on the Duluth campus.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

50% Teaching: Skills Course Instruction
Serves as an in-person course instructor for the Pharmaceutical Care Skills Lab course sequence in Duluth during both Fall and Spring semesters. This lab course sequence is responsible for teaching skills in extemporaneous compounding, sterile compounding, and clinical skills.

This includes, but may not be limited to:
Implement previously set syllabus, lab schedule, grading policy, and other course materials in coordination with other PCLC instructors on both TC and Duluth campuses
Work closely and regularly communicate with lab course directors in Duluth
Collaborate with other College of Pharmacy faculty to develop, update, and lead discussions as scheduled for the course(s), integrating with other courses as appropriate
Implement previously developed lab activities and teaching assistants (TA) guides in coordination with other lab faculty-Manage assessment rubrics for course activities in an electronic system in coordination with other PCLC instructors
Hold office hours (or open office door policy)
Train and mentor teaching assistants for their direct teaching roles in the course. Teaching assistants may include: PharmD students, graduate students, and pharmacy residents
Facilitate and supervise teaching assistants’ instruction in the course
Monitor teaching assistants’ provision of feedback, including grading of students’ activities
Support students who meet requirements for minimum competency and remediation in PCLC courses, including plans outlined by the Academic Standing Committee
Work with appropriate staff to maintain supplies necessary for the delivery of the course

20% Teaching: Spring Calculations course
Serve as Course Director of calculations course that is delivered to year 1 students in their spring semester.
Review and update existing course materials
Update course Canvas site
Supervise teaching assistants grading of homework and exams
Revise and administer exams
Respond to student questions via email or in-person
Submit final grades

20% Teaching: Team-Based Learning activity facilitation
Provide in class support for team-based learning (TBL) activities to ensure students on the Duluth campus have an equitable experience and provide pharmacist expertise. If pharmacy residents are available and assigned to assist with TBLs, serve as a guide and advisor to support the resident learning.

10% Teaching: Other support
Serve as a support instructor, upon request, for classroom activities on the Duluth campus. Activities could include make-up exam scheduling, proctoring, discussion facilitation, case-based discussions, outreach activities, etc.

Supervision:
Train and mentor teaching assistants for their direct teaching roles in the skills learning course.
Direct the work of teaching assistants grading pharmaceutical calculations
Serve as a guide and advisor to support the resident learning in TBLs.

Required qualifications- Pharm.D. degree and residency training or equivalent experience, license or the ability to obtain a license to practice pharmacy in the state of Minnesota, and a strong pharmacy practice background, including knowledge of the philosophy and practice of pharmaceutical care.

Preferred qualifications- Experience in more than one health care setting, teaching experience, knowledge of computer technology in support of teaching, and a demonstrated commitment to the profession and to high quality patient care.
