The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Pharmacy's department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is currently seeking creative, motivated, and disciplined candidates to fill the Mass Spectrometry Imaging Specialist, Lead Mass Spectrometry Imaging Specialist, or Mass Spectrometry Imaging Manager position (Lab Research Specialist, Lead Lab Research Specialist or Lab Research Manager) related to mass spectrometry imaging analyses for its Mass Spectrometry Center. The selected candidate will fill the position commensurate with their education and experience.
The UMB School of Pharmacy Mass Spectrometry Center is an Organized Research Center that hosts 20 state-of-the-art mass spectrometers and has expertise in metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, drug analysis, protein structure, and mass spectrometry imaging with an emphasis on collaborative research.

POSITION OBJECTIVES
The candidate will execute duties related to proteomics analyses offered by the School of Pharmacy Mass Spectrometry Center and will perform independent and collaborative research within the Mass Spectrometry Center. This position is responsible for ensuring design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities. The candidate is expected to contribute technical leadership in proteomics and related mass spectrometry and analytical topics.
The successful candidate will develop and implement state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based methods to identify, characterize, and quantify small molecules and proteins using mass spectrometry imaging and related mass spectrometry-based techniques from complex protein mixtures such as cell lysates and human plasma / tissue samples.
The selected candidates would work on one or more of the following projects: mass spectrometry imaging of bacterial metabolites in lung infection models; mass spectrometry imaging lipid biomarkers and therapeutic compounds in radiation damage models; mass spectrometry imaging of lipids in a brain injury model; development of DESI- and/or MALDI-MSI methodology.
In addition, the candidate will operate and maintain a high-resolution tandem mass spectrometers. Experience with Synapt and FT-ICR instrumentation a plus.
Candidate will participate in training staff, students, or fellows in advanced techniques by mass spectrometry used in the center through informal discussions or formal workshops offered by the Center.
PRIMARY DUTIES - Mass Spectrometry Imaging Specialist:
Identify, advise, or assist investigators with developing strategies for sample preparation and mass spectrometry imaging to identify, quantify and characterize small molecules and proteins.
Participate in development and implementation of training materials used to train staff, students, or fellows in advanced techniques by mass spectrometry used in the center through informal discussions or formal workshops offered by the Center.
Participate in activities pertaining to MS Center operations.
Collaborate on biomedical projects. May perform independent research in technological developments in mass spectrometry imaging.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
PRIMARY DUTIES - Lead Mass Spectrometry Imaging Specialist:
Perform duties of the Mass Spectrometry Imaging Specialist position.
Independently lead laboratory research activities by ensuring design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities. Lead the development and execution of project research studies. Revise studies, in consultation with upper management or principal investigator, to meet changing needs and requirements and enforces standards.
Expand or develop new skills, as needed, based on information from literature, in collaboration with other laboratories or vendors, or by interacting with colleagues at meetings or professional presentations.
Develop and follow SOPs. Develop and maintain collaborative connections with the investigators.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
PRIMARY DUTIES - Mass Spectrometry Imaging Manager:
Manage the operations of a single or multiple research laboratory(s) and provide administrative and technical support to the research activities. Ensure the design, development, documentation, and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities. Contribute to creation of new laboratory or expansion of existing laboratory(s).
Manage laboratory staff including training, scheduling, coordinating and delegating work, and monitoring and evaluating performance to promote maximum staff member benefit and effectiveness as well as overall functional productivity.
Manage the development and execution of research studies. Revises studies, in consultation with upper management or principal investigator, to meet changing needs and requirements and enforces standards.
Manage laboratory operations including the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions.
May perform laboratory maintenance and laboratory research activities required by the study(s).
May assemble and assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations, and computer graphics for publication.
Provide for establishment or development of laboratory by evaluating equipment or machinery to be ordered, planning interactions with IT systems, and drafting Standard Operating Procedures for using new equipment.
Foster and support a conducive consultant/client environment, providing business unit and campus representatives with assessment, training, and advisement in research area.
