Position description
The Department of Family Medicine pursues a tripartite mission of innovative research, education, and clinical care in a highly diverse environment. The Department of Family Medicine and the School of Medicine at UC San Diego are committed to academic, scientific, and clinical excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.
In 1960, the University of California established UC San Diego as an integral part of the UC system. From the outset, it emphasized educating the next generation of California scientists and engineers, and expanded with the launch of the School of Medicine in 1968. Like its parent university, the school has placed a high standard upon linking basic and clinical discovery with outstanding, advanced methods for delivering compassionate care to patients. At present, UC San Diego boasts national and international accolades for the excellence of its education programs; the School of Medicine consistently ranks among the Top 10 in research funding; and its clinical programs have earned a number of distinguished awards for quality patient care. UC San Diego Health ranks in the top tier of academic hospitals and health systems, and over the past few years has constructed a number of incredible new inpatient and outpatient spaces.
As an academic administrative unit in the School of Medicine, the mission of the Department of Family Medicine is to create an academically rich, culturally diverse and safe environment for our trainees and patients, by following the most up to date safety measures, clinical standards and evidence-based medicine. The Department of Family Medicine has approximately 200 personnel including 70 salaried faculty and Management and Senior Professional (MSP) physicians and 70 core and affiliated residents and fellows. Department activities total approximately $52 million: $24 million annual clinical budget, $18 million research portfolio and $10 million annual department budget including teaching and self-supported programs. Under the leadership of the Interim Chair, the Department is currently undergoing significant strategic planning. This includes the management, strategic growth and improvement of four faculty practices focused on value-based care and innovative care models across Sports Medicine, Behavioral Health, and the Clinical Center for Integrative Medicine (CIM). In addition, advances are being made in the philanthropic development mission of the Department, which is comprised of three divisions, five centers, and approximately 15 programs.
At UC San Diego's Department of Family Medicine, the vision for research is to be innovators and leaders learning health systems and practice-based research. The research mission is to improve health and health care through advancing, applying and disseminating knowledge. With funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), private foundations and UC San Diego, Family Medicine faculty lead research projects on patient-centered care, prevention, and health care professional well-being. They assess the true impact of educational efforts, examine how best to integrate research findings into clinics and practices, and critically examine how the care best results in optimal outcomes. They invite patients and research investigators to collaborate on designing projects that will have maximal impact on scientific and clinical communities, as well as patient populations.
The Department of Family Medicine continues the ongoing commitment to education at all levels of medicine. The Department's deep commitment is demonstrated by the number of faculty involved in and leading educational opportunities, from medical student education to the practicing physician supporting robust residency and fellowship programs.
The Department of Family Medicine invites applications for the role of Department Chair. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Chair will be responsible for the Department's overall management, academic planning, budget, personnel, resource allocation, and programs. The Chair will play a major role in the planning and development of the academic curriculum and research portfolio. Sufficient infrastructural support will be provided to enable the Chair to maintain a clinical practice. Given the interdisciplinary nature of education and research at UC San Diego, there will be opportunities to catalyze interactions among programs and foster a culture of learning across the continuum of clinical and implementation research and education, including in partnership with the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Jacobs School of Engineering, Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health, The Design Lab and other campus partners.
UC San Diego seeks candidates whose leadership capabilities and experience, teaching, research and community service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence. The successful candidate will be able to prioritize, grow, and support the current excellence in patient care; advance methods of medical education; and create opportunities to accelerate innovation and research. They will also identify additional recruits to help grow the scholarly activities of the department. As with similar roles, the Chair is expected to abide by UC San Diego's Guidelines for Department Chairs Duties, including in the areas of faculty recruitment, justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, wellness, service, and other policies and regulations. At the time of the new appointment, proposed candidates must show evidence of outstanding qualifications through letters of recommendation, teaching evaluations, and patient satisfaction assessments.
