Under supervision the Lab Assistant will assist with and carry out various experimental and data analysis tasks pertaining to mass spectrometry analysis. Incumbent will follow safety protocols for a chemistry laboratory. In addition, incumbent will perform laboratory maintenance duties, including aqueous solutions, solvent and reagent preparation/purification, sample preparation, disposal of hazardous waste and instrument maintenance. Will be expected to interact easily with faculty, postdoctoral scholars, students and technicians in a laboratory.
Graduation from high school or a GED and two (2) years of laboratory experience or three (3) years of college courses including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences, one (1) year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and have the ability to successfully performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Proven ability to perform technical laboratory research in chemistry (e.g., carry out multistep synthetic experiments). Proficiency in NMR structural elucidation. Proficiency in purification and isolation of compounds.
Strong computer literacy, including experience in using ChemDraw, Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Ability to follow basic research protocols and follow instructions. Attention to protocol and details.
Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety and ability to work carefully with potentially harmful agents.
Excellent interpersonal, as well as written and verbal communication skills to interact with a variety of personalities and a diverse group of people.
Have a strong interest in data analysis.
Understanding of UC ordering procedures.
College degree in chemistry and industrial experience.
College-level course work in chemistry.
