The specialized residency in health system pharmacy practice administration is defined as an organized, directed postgraduate program of practical experience in pharmacy practice administration. The program is 12 months in length and designed to progress a resident through the development of increasingly complex competencies in pharmacy practice and practice management.
The primary objective of the program is to prepare pharmacists to assume leadership positions in integrated health care systems. Graduates of the program will have a higher level of competency in assessing and resolving the health needs of the public as it relates to the safe and effective use of medication and will be expected to assume a leadership role in pharmacy practice.
Participants will receive training in the following areas:
leadership and administrative skills necessary to manage pharmaceutical care needs of patients
interdisciplinary problem solving and decision making skills
public health and quality patient care by fostering the optimal and responsible use of drugs
financial management for health systems pharmacies
knowledge and expertise in cost-effective drug utilization through the application of pharmacoeconomic principles;
strategies in the prevention of medication errors and adverse events
knowledge to identify, analysis, and evaluation of health care trends and in the development of public policy
role of pharmacy in conducting and supporting drug research
The goal of the residency is to teach the residents how to manage pharmacy services by applying a mix of traditional and innovative management theories to solve operational problems. Residents are assigned rotations with key pharmacy administrators in critical areas of the department. They are expected to operate in the same capacity as their preceptors by the end of the rotation. Any projects assigned to the resident are meant to be of great importance and significance to the department and will teach the resident important time management, communication and project management skills. By the end of the year, residents are expected to be performing at the administrator level.
Saint Luke's Hospital is a 611 bed tertiary care facility in mid-town Kansas City. It is part of Saint Luke's Health System, an integrated health system consisting of 10 area hospitals and several physician and health provider clinics. Special strengths include the Mid-America Heart Institute and the Marion Bloch Neuroscience Institute.
