DESCRIPTION The Hematology/Oncology Division in the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine, University of California, Irvine, is recruiting for a full-time Specialist Series academic to support research projects in the laboratory of Dr. Pamela Becker. This Specialist Series academic position is available immediately.
The Becker's lab focuses on drug resistance in blood cancers (e.g. acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, multiple myeloma) based on clinical features, mutations and gene expression, with use of high throughput functional screening to directly assay drug response.
The Specialist Series academic will provide long-term research projects support to Dr. Pamela Becker's laboratory:
JOB DUTIES Consult with Principal Investigator, academic researchers, pharmaceutical/biotech company researchers, and/or postdoctoral scholars on the nature and general plan of approach to basic research problems; perform a wide-variety of standard repetitive but highly specialized experimental procedures and techniques required for research projects; perform a limited variety of non-standard laboratory and experimental procedures requiring ingenuity, resourcefulness, and adaptability to special and changing needs of research; carry out in vitro experiments based on specified projects including examining new targeted therapies, genetic, and molecular biology techniques; modify, vary, or adapt standard procedures to meet the needs of research projects or improve tests that are unsatisfactory, and, after studying available literature, analyze and alter conditions under which determinations are made; participate in collaborative projects and/or project development activities involving multidisciplinary staff, by modifying, varying, or adapting standard procedures to meet project needs; assist Principal Investigator, academic researchers, and/or postdoctoral scholars with data collection and analysis, preparation of data for presentation, publication, and grant applications; and contribute to the completion of research project goals.
Assist with daily laboratory flow, experiments, procedures and maintenance: ordering lab supplies and reagents, placing orders both on a routine and urgent basis, stocking and organizing the laboratory, and requesting equipment repairs/calibration as needed; request purchase requisitions with the Division Office when supplies are needed, ensure purchases are made and received, and provide packing slips for financial reconciliation; work with any student and trainee staff members working in the lab on any given project; may assist with training for new staff members or collaborators on the techniques used by the lab to ensure adequate quality control; report to Principal Investigator of any issues related to equipment, supplies, or biosafety concerns; engage frequently with internal and external contacts on specific projects or subjects.
The Specialist Series academic will also be encouraged to attend and present the results of their research at scientific conferences, participate in study meetings and interact with collaborative research groups; mentor and work with graduate and undergraduate students; develop and pursue their own research ideas; as well as develop and polish any skills and experiences that they feel will best prepare them for their career goals.
Qualifications: We are seeking motivated applicants who have a bachelor's or higher degree(s) in molecular biology, engineering, biology, chemistry, or related field. Candidates should have a record of completed undergraduate or graduate research that can be directly applied to the field of interest described above. Laboratory experience is required. The successful candidate must have a broad range of skills, including the ability to maintain effective interactions and collaborations with other members of the lab and scientific community. Ability to maintain the laboratory notebook and record of acquired data and to follow written and verbal directions is essential.
The position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate and is for a period of one year with the possibility of renewal. Strong experience and interest in one or more of the following areas is required:
Tissue culture with cell lines and primary cells
Molecular biology techniques including preparation of DNA, RNA
Experience managing multiple research projects
Flow cytometry analysis and fluorescence activated cell sorting
Magnetic bead isolation devices
In vitro drug sensitivity assays
Generation and organization of laboratory research data
Familiarity with data analysis and graphics software
Other preferred experience and skills include the following:

Ability to define problems, identify relevant factors, formulate logical conclusions and suggest solutions
