Oregon Health and Science University has an opening for a Staff Scientist at the Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research (CEDAR) center within the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute in Portland, Oregon. The Staff Scientist will help develop major scientific project initiatives in the laboratory and aid in overseeing the implementation and execution of projects, including: maintaining a high level of professional expertise in the field; supervising and providing guidance and mentorship to other scientists within the laboratory; designing and directing or executing experiments; establishing laboratory procedures and systems that enforce and maintain a high level of organization in the lab. The Staff Scientist will conduct cancer research focusing on areas of early detection of aggressive tumors, biological basis of cancer transformation and cancer biomarker discovery for use in clinical assays. The Staff Scientist will apply a range of Molecular Biology methods involving DNA, RNA, and protein analysis to study cancer initiating events in cell culture and animal (mouse) models of common human cancers. The Staff Scientist will use techniques such as mouse embryonic stem cell cultures, mouse colony management, genetic manipulation of cells, ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, whole genome bisulfite-seq, and CRISPR-Cas9 gene disruption methods. Specifically, the Staff Scientist will be involved in the following:

• Scientific Project Oversight (60%): help to develop and oversee laboratory research projects, including identification of scientific problem, design of approach to address it, and identification, acquisition and management of resources to perform investigations. Assign personnel, track their progress, and ensure maximum productivity. Foster and support teamwork. Provide training and guidance to postdoctoral fellows, clinical research fellows, graduate students and undergraduate students.
• Scientific Writing and Project Proposal Development (20%): Prepare research findings for presentation at scientific meetings and conference and manuscripts for publication. Prepare research project proposals for internal review, prepare annual or bi-annual research progress summaries and presentations for CEDAR scientists and staff.
• Laboratory Organization and Compliance (15%): Develop and implement procedures and systems to maximize the organization and efficiency within designated projects. Mentor and train lab members on lab practices and protocols. Ensure that staff is adequately trained to meet compliance for regulatory board reviews as required. Aid in the submission of specific protocols to the Institutional Review Board and other regulatory review boards.
• Collaborative Interactions (5%): Develop, foster and maintain relationships with partners in academia and in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industries. Oversee the advancement of specific sponsored research agreement (SRA) funded projects and ensure that external partners receive regular project updates. Participate in occasional teaching assignments
• Monitor expenditures against departmental budget; prepares necessary documentation for supervisor review/approval; tabulates budgetary data, calculates figures, and checks for accuracy.

• Ph.D. in Molecular Biology/Pathology or Cancer Biology plus five years of postdoctoral experience in Molecular or Cancer Biology, including preparation of high throughput sequencing libraries including ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, and bisulphite-seq (BS-seq and RRBS); mammalian stem cell culture techniques; gene targeting, over-expression and knockdown techniques, including but not limited to CRISPR-Cas9 gene disruption methods; and genomic data analysis and programming languages.
• Must have publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
• Must have experience working in a laboratory including animal handling experience, mouse colony management, and biosafety protocols.
• Must have permanent U.S, work authorization.
