Position Summary: Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Manager for Translational Synthesis Core. As part of the Office for Research, this position reports to the Director of Molecular Design & Synthesis. The position is responsible for operational activities of the core facility including personnel, project, and data management, laboratory procedures, maintenance of laboratory equipment, quality assurance, and hazardous materials management. The Laboratory Manager works with labs, departments, units and schools, across the university community, as well as with the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry groups to assist in the generation and preparation of preliminary data for grant proposals to secure extramural funding from traditional and nonātraditional funding sources. The position teaches, trains, and supervises faculty, research associates, postdoctoral associates, graduate students, staff, scientists, and others seeking to utilize the core facility across schools and units of the university. Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Manages and direct all operations of the core facility and its personnel. Responsible for maintaining the technical basis and guidelines for all phases of the core facility and will oversee all work that is performed within the lab by evaluating the quality of work performance with regard to conformance to quality standards, policies and procedures as well as evaluating the workload volume and scheduling to determine and ensure the most effective, efficient and productive use of laboratory staff and facilities. Interfaces with scientists, academic researchers, staff and other collaborators. Leads the effort with the Molecular Design and Synthesis group to maintain program database, institutional knowledge, maintain the technical basis and guidelines for all phases of the core facility. Evaluates the quality of work performance with regard to conformance to quality standards, policies and procedures. Evaluate workload volume and scheduling to determine optimal use of lab staff and facilities. Researches/keeps up with data and literature in multiple programs to aid in design of novel and critical compounds. Assists in the data collection and interpretation of data need for a variety of publications and patent application filings, as necessary.Minimum Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. A minimum of five (5) years' experience in a molecular design and synthesis laboratory with successful completion of college level course work including biology and/or anatomy, mathematics and an understanding of metric system are required.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Specialized training including the performance, development and design of protocols, Standard Operating Procedures, Good Laboratory Practices procedures and laboratory records maintenance is integral to successful collaborations with faculty and external collaborators. Knowledge of histochemistry, microscopy, processing techniques, preparation of specimens, medical terminology, chemistry, Good Lab Practices, Standard Operating Procedures, drug discovery and safety testing at a level normally acquired through a bachelor's degree and experience in a pharmaceutical company and/or molecular design and synthesis laboratory.
