This PGY2 Geriatrics pharmacy residency program builds on the knowledge and skills acquired during the PGY1 training to prepare pharmacists capable of managing the complex needs of older adults. Patient care responsibilities include ambulatory, acute, intermediate, and long-term care in the older adult.
CAVHS has established clinical pharmacy services in the following: geriatric primary care, home based primary care, palliative care, mental health, and long-term care. The resident participates in interdisciplinary teams in most practice areas. Longitudinal experiences include mentoring PGY1 residents, drug information, and memory clinic. Specialties not available at the VA can be arranged through other affiliates. Residents are responsible for didactic and experiential teaching of pharmacy students and will receive their Teaching Certificate through the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy (if no teaching certificate completed as a PGY1). CAVHS also collaborates with the VISN 16/Little Rock Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) for education and research specific to older adults.
