The Business Development group at BD Biosciences (BDB) complements the business’s internal product development capabilities by identifying and acquiring innovative technologies and products from external partners. These partners include universities, research institutions, and companies, both large and small, in all parts of the world. Business Development works closely with multiple functions across BDB to evaluate potential partnering opportunities, in alignment with the business’s strategic, financial, and operational goals, and has primary responsibility for executing business deals with partners.
The Associate Director, Business Development, will be responsible for all activities necessary to bring new technologies and products into BDB for development and commercialization, from initial identification of promising scientific innovations, through internal evaluation and business case development, structuring and negotiation of business agreements, and on-going relationship management. This position also manages two Business Development associates involved in intellectual property licensing.
The Associate Director, Business Development, reports to the Director, Business Development.
Structures and negotiates business agreements. These may include confidentiality, material transfer, collaboration, in-license, out-license, development, supply, and marketing/distribution agreements.
Seeks out new product opportunities in BDB’s key focus areas. This may involve attending scientific conferences, reading scientific publications, and interacting with academic technology transfer offices and Business Development groups at other companies.
Works with other BDB functions (R&D, Marketing, Medical/Scientific Affairs, Finance, Legal, IP, etc.) to evaluate the benefits and risks of bringing new technologies into BDB for development and commercialization.
Works with Finance and Marketing to build financial business cases demonstrating the potential value of new technologies and associated products.
Manages long-term relationships with external collaborators and other partners.
Represents Business Development on cross-functional BDB teams, including platform, program, and strategy teams.
Manages Sr. Licensing Associate and Compliance Specialist positions.
Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in the life sciences.
An advanced degree in the life sciences and/or an MBA are preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of business development experience in the life sciences, medical device, and/or pharmaceutical industries.
Demonstrated track record of success structuring and negotiating business agreements (confidentiality, material transfer, collaboration, in-license, out-license, development, supply, and marketing/distribution agreements).
Experience with intellectual property licensing is highly desirable.
Experience working with university technology transfer offices is valued.
Leadership skills to effectively coach, mentor and manage associates reporting to position.
Ability to come up-to-speed quickly on new technology areas.
Excellent presentation and communication skills, verbal and written.
Capable of working independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
Able to work on multiple projects with competing priorities.
Experience working in a highly-matrixed organization.
Comfortable speaking with both business people and scientists.
Able to travel up to 30% of time.
