Pharmacists completing this residency program will be able to practice pharmacy in multiple patient care settings in an independent and professional manner. They will be able to integrate data and formulate appropriate pharmacotherapeutic recommendations to other health care providers for individual patients or on a system level. They will be able to demonstrate leadership abilities including identifying system levels issues, promoting the pharmacy profession, and utilizing interpersonal skills to achieve goals. Research and education will be two other key elements that the pharmacist will be able to successfully utilize in promoting appropriate drug therapy throughout all levels of the medication use process. Self-development and evaluation skills, key to ongoing success as a professional, will be an integral part of the program's structure.
Goals of Program
Practice in a professional and ethical manner, and exhibit accountability for personal excellence in the provision of patient care in various settings
Provide patient care through direct interaction with interdisciplinary teams and maintain accountability for drug therapy outcomes
Develop and implement systems/processes or clinical guidelines to improve the medication use process
Develop leadership skills
Perform practice related research
Provide education to patients and other health care providers regarding optimal pharmacotherapy
Throughout the course of the year residents are primarily responsible for clinically based patient care, while also gaining experience in other areas of pharmacy practice that allow them to take patient care responsibilities. By incorporating all of these elements (professionalism, patient care, management, and drug information/medication use according to policy) along with a research project, the program follows the standards set forth by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists for pharmacy practice residencies.
The Pharmacy Residency Program is a 12-month, post-graduate, full-time curriculum that provides residents a wide range of training opportunities with a primary focus on ambulatory care. Core patient care rotations are all on-site and are precepted by the clinical specialist for that area. There is a combination of longitudinal and block rotations.
The resident will also develop and complete a major research project, which will be presented as a platform presentation at the regional pharmacy residency conference. The resident must complete a formal manuscript detailing their research; we encourage them to submit to a peer reviewed journal.
Teaching opportunities are provided through on-site teaching of pharmacy students from one of the local schools of pharmacy that have clinical or institutional rotations at Pennsylvania Hospital. Residents have the opportunity to obtain a teaching certificate as part of our collaboration with Temple University School of Pharmacy, if they are interested. All residents are required to complete an ACPE-accredited continuing education presentation for our pharmacy department. In addition, residents will teach patients attending the classes in the on-site Diabetes Education Center.
Other learning experiences aimed at producing a well-rounded pharmacist, include development of oral and written communication skills through presentations, patient education, participation in various departmental administrative committees and pharmaceutical distribution services. In addition, ability to network with local residents at regular meetings is strongly encouraged. Upon completion of the program, trainees are awarded a residency certificate.
