The SCI is seeking an ideal candidate for the combined roles of Life Science Research Professional 4 and Lab Manager to oversee and manage major portions of complex research projects now underway by two of our nationally prominent cancer scientists: Dr. Nathanael Gray (Chemical & Systems Biology) and Dr. Priscilla Yang (Microbiology and Immunology).
This position will initially involve organizing laboratory set-up at four different locations on the Stanford campus, coordinating laboratory moves from the East coast, interfacing with multiple vendors, and ensuring facility renovations meet the needs of planned research. Once the labs are established, the LSRP 4/ Lab Manager will manage the laboratories as well as engage in individual scientific research focused on cancer therapeutics development. The position will have dual reporting to both Drs. Gray and Yang.
The ideal candidate will have a science degree (MS/PhD) and be intimately familiar with laboratory research (ideally chemical biology, virology and/or drug discovery background). Excellent organizational skills and familiarity with government- and industry-funded research, as well as health and safety requirements, are essential. Lead multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
Design research approaches for the entire project, including background research, experimental design and execution, problem solving, and writing up for publication.
Conduct complex (lab and/or field) experiments, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes; analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures and methods; oversee critical analyses of data from entire project.
Develop new protocols; test and evaluate a variety of approaches.
Participate in creating new research proposals, and prepare for submission for funding and grants.
Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of the research project.
Contribute original ideas of major methodologies that alter the course of the investigation or develop innovative solution(s) to complex research problems.
Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; proceed without consultation with principal investigator to implement new techniques into research project.
Co-author publications; may present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
Supervise other staff, including hiring, performance management, and related duties. Provide instruction on complex techniques and direction on projects.
Plan and determine equipment needs, authorize purchase of equipment including capital improvements, and manage installation of equipment and instruments in collaboration with facilities services staff. Evaluate and strategically determine equipment upgrade/replacement options and other alternatives in lieu of repair based on latest technological advances and current and future needs. Negotiate, select, and monitor complex equipment service contracts and warranties with vendors.
Participate in creating strategic plans for future laboratory needs in consultation with faculty and department leadership. Consult and collaborate with faculty and department leadership to plan and allocate lab space for current and future teaching and research needs.
Design and implement plans for renovations of equipment and/or facilities; manage complex laboratory moves in collaboration with facilities services staff.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ideally previous experience and success in academic or industrial (pharmaceutical or biotechnology company) lab management. Scientific background (ideally PhD or at least 10 years of relevant work experience ) and general understanding of laboratory research. Excellent communication and organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to multi-task across many simultaneous projects. Ability to think proactively and establish work-flows to ensure completion of tasks within timelines. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and six years of relevant work experience; or Master's degree in a related scientific field and four years relevant experience; or PhD in related scientific field and two years of relevant experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

General computer skills, experience with databases and scientific applications, and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
